One community. A border through the middle of it.

Una sola comunidad. Con una frontera en medio.

The computers went south on the same roads families came north on. For twenty-six years, students in Cicero and students in Durango have been teaching each other across that line — and opening their homes on both sides of it.

The road years, 2000–2008

Los años de carretera, 2000–2008

It started small on purpose. A handful of students and adults drove refurbished computers to Santiago Papasquiaro and Tepehuanes and set them up by hand. By the second year, the governor of Durango was providing transportation and a reception, and Morton students were teaching more than 250 children across towns where many schools were receiving their first computer, ever.

Empezó pequeño a propósito.

2003

Durango families begin hosting Morton East students in their homes. Remember the order: they opened their doors first. The first institutional partnership — with the COBAED school network — begins the same year, and it's still running today.

2004

Cicero answers. Forty Durango students and teachers come north for the first exchange — hosted in Morton East families' homes, shadowing Morton students through their school day. The same year, a delegation of 24 youth from seven Chicago schools goes south, working on a safe-water project alongside a US CDC environmental engineer, and Morton East's folkloric dance team performs with Durango's.

Cicero responde.

2005–07

The trips get deeper: a real-time Durango–Chicago video link built with Northwestern University, student documentary teams, forestry work, and the Eco-Ethics Wilderness Training — Durango and Chicago students, three nights together in the remote mountains.

2008

It stops being safe to travel. The delegation makes the hard call: this will be the last trip south until conditions allow a return.

The trips ended. The bridge didn't.

Los viajes terminaron. El puente no.

A hundred computers a year kept going south — every year. The exchange kept coming north — every year. In 2015 the thousandth computer arrived in Durango. And then the teaching itself crossed over: starting in 2018, Morton East students began teaching robotics to Durango classrooms in Spanish, over the internet — years before the pandemic forced the rest of the world to learn how.

A relationship that survives when the road closes isn't a program. It's kinship.

In 2024, a U.S. Embassy grant of $49,705 grew the Mexico network from two robotics programs to nine, across four states, reaching 243 students. Here is what those students built — because the bridge was never about giving Mexico anything. It was about what people do when the door opens.

On the 2025 exchange, a student named Jesica de la Cruz came north from Nuevo Ideal with her classmates. Her trip was, in her teacher's words, the realization of years of sacrifice and savings by her parents — who hoped to give her opportunities they never had themselves.

A robotics club did that. Because this was never two communities exchanging visits. It's one community, split by a border, using technology to hold itself together. Un club de robótica hizo eso. The 2025 exchange — the 19th — brought 60 students and teachers north. They visited Morton East, ETHS, and UIC, and the closing celebration was thrown by the Duranguense Association of Chicago, with laptops raffled to take home. The diaspora hosting its own.
