The idea is older than the club.
“Each one, teach one.” The phrase was born in the United States during slavery, when a person who learned to read made it a duty to teach someone else. It traveled into the literacy movements of the Philippines, the political prisoners' classrooms at Robben Island, and the adult education campaigns of Jamaica and Nigeria. Wherever people were denied learning, they turned learning itself into the act of resistance — by passing it on.
In 1998, that inheritance landed at 2423 South Austin Boulevard. Not at a magnet school. Not in a suburb with money. Here — applied to a new kind of gap: who does, and who doesn't, get taught technology.
It started with six students and a hundred donated computers. They learned to rebuild machines and keep records — real inventory, real accountability, at fifteen and sixteen years old. They put more than forty rebuilt computers back into their own school and ran demonstrations for the Computer Applications classes. The club's first beneficiary was Morton East itself.
Notice what that already contains: learn the skill, then turn around and hand it to the room behind you. The whole model — Learn. Teach. Lead. Repeat. — was there from the first hundred machines. It just didn't have its name yet.
Lidera. Repite. — estaba ahí desde las primeras cien máquinas. Solo que todavía no tenía nombre.
Cyber Service students launch the Free Community Computer Program — computers and instruction for the Cicero Youth Commission and the Boys & Girls Club. The club stops being a school project and becomes a community one.

Morton East students carry refurbished computers to Durango, Mexico — the first trip of a relationship that has never stopped. That story gets its own page: the Bridge to Durango.

The community program grows to ten Cicero-area sites serving hundreds of children. A second chapter opens at Lake View High School on Chicago's North Side. The Morton East idea is officially reproducible.

The exchange begins: Durango students and teachers come north, hosted in Morton East families' homes. It has happened every year since — October 2026 will be the 20th.
A chapter opens at Evanston Township High School — today, with Morton East, one of YTC's two Global Learning Centers. Evanston is downstream of this building.

The curriculum makes its big turn: from computer repair to Arduino robotics — programming machines to act in the physical world, with technical English woven into every lesson.
Students begin teaching across the border over the internet — years before the pandemic made virtual classrooms universal. When the world had to learn it overnight, this network had been doing it for years.
The idea born in this building runs across Illinois, Mexico, and Guatemala — and connects to partner programs as far as Africa. Nine robotics programs across four Mexican states. A new course in Quetzaltenango. University mentors from Georgia Tech and UIC. And still: zero full-time employees. Students drive the engine. Adults steer them toward opportunities and get out of the way.
You haven't mastered it until you can teach it.
That's the standard, and it's also the engine. A student learns the curriculum, then trains to teach it, then leads a group, then brings up the next student. Every rung is documented in digital micro-credentials a college can read. The program doesn't scale through staff or offices — it scales through its own graduates. That single structural choice is why a club with no full-time employees ended up teaching on three continents.
And the students on the other side of the border want the same thing. When 200 students in the Mexico programs were surveyed before their course began, 88% said they want to teach other children what they learn. Nobody imposed the ladder. It's what everyone reaches for.
Students. That's not a slogan — the club is student-run by design. Adult sponsors are in the classroom, and YTC's network creates the opportunities: competitions, university mentors, cross-border teaching, exchanges. But where the club goes is driven by the students in it.
